This week we have been learning about children in Victorian times. We found out that schools weren’t free in the earlier part of the Victorian era so only the wealthier families could afford to send their children there. Poor children often went out to work. We learned about the jobs they did, the long hours they worked and how dangerous it was. It made us realise how lucky we are! We pretended to be concerned Victorian citizens and wrote letters to the Government asking them to put a stop to child labour.
We also learned about Victorian schools and found out that Victorians eventually passed laws making schooling free and compulsory for all children up to the age of ten. Ask us to tell you what was similar or different about a Victorian classroom compared to our own. In our writing we wrote ‘A Day in the Life of Victorian school child’ and thought about what their routine might have been, what lessons they had and what equipment they might have used.
In RE and ICT we talked about New Year celebrations and wrote some New Year’s resolutions of our own. Lots of us wanted to challenge ourselves to try harder in our school work, some of us wanted to eat more fruit and vegetables and some of us had some rather disgusting habits we wanted to kick!
Also, in preparation for our church service on Friday, we have been making Christingles using oranges, cocktail sticks and sweets.
