Welcome back! We hope you have all had a good half term break.
In our topic lessons this week we have been learning about Florence Nightingale. Through reading books and information sheets about her, we learned about her childhood, her love of reading and her desire to be a nurse. Despite her family’s disapproval, Florence did become a nurse and led a group of nurses to serve in a hospital during the Crimean War. Ask us what it was like when she arrived at the hospital and what she and her team did to improve things. We wrote biographies of Florence’s life, trying hard to write in clear sections.
We have also been learning about punctuation – specifically, when we need to use a full stop, exclamation mark or question mark. Ask us about why these marks are important for a reader and why it’s important to use them accurately in our writing.
In maths we have been starting to learn about fractions. We know that a half is one of 2 equal parts – if the two parts are not equal then they are not halves. Looking at shapes and collections of objects, we had to decide which showed half and which did not.
We have been keeping a close eye on our beans this week, looking for changes and growth and in our science lesson we starting writing a bean diary!
In art we have continued to look at the work of Lowry and have created landscapes based on his work. We will add buildings and people to our backgrounds in the next few art sessions.
