This week I have been impressed! As tasks go this is a tall order but really this week I have been quite stunned by the change in the class.
Talking to the children it is wonderful to see how much responsibility they are beginning to take for their own work. The days of ‘near enough is good enough’ are beginning to ebb, being replaced instead with a work ethic that is driven by a strong desire to improve, not just because they are being told to but because they genuinely want to, and actually, might even believe they can.
I have been talking to the class all week in groups and individually about what steps they are taking to make sure that their work is improving and the intelligence of the responses really surprised me, in the best of ways. It’s as if the half term has given them a bit of a run up.
Picture this. I gave them a tables test where they had to multiply any double digit number by any number up to 12 e.g. 38×7, 86×12. Most of them laughed at the end and said it was easy! Even those who still found it tricky could agree that they could see a way to do it if they’d had a little more time. Imagine that happening back in September.
Like I say, impressive stuff! Why not give them a little test on those sorts of numbers at home? And while you’re at it, why not try it yourself..?
