This week we have started learning about the Great Fire of London. Before we started, we created a large timeline to help us order some well-known events in the history of London. The events took place between 1600 and 2012 and included the plague, the first underground station opening and the Olympic Games – ask us how many others we can remember.
So far we have used books, pictures and information from websites to find out how, where and when the fire started. We have also been investigating how the fire spread so quickly and caused so much damage. Ask us what we found out.
Our Great Fire of London Workshop was really good fun. We learnt so much about the events of the fire. We did lots of acting and singing and we worked in groups to turn ourselves into different landmarks! We also became burning houses and this helped us to see why the fire spread so quickly. We also got to talk about the objects that were special to us, that we would save from a fire. Later in the week we wrote thank you letters to Polly, who ran our workshop.
In maths we have been using dienes (tens sticks and ones) to make amounts and then add or take away multiples of 10.
We also had a try at adding and taking away 2 digit numbers that weren’t multiples of 10.

In science we have been looking at bridges. First we looked at different bridges from around the world, discussing the different materials they were made from and why. Then we had to work in a pair to design and make a bridge that could stand on its own, was wide enough to hold a toy car and was strong enough to hold more than 1 toy car. We were only allowed to use card/paper and sellotape/glue. It was very tricky but we persevered to make some great bridges.
