Maths

In maths this week we have been learning different methods to work out multiplication calculations. There are three methods we have been using short method, long method and grid. Our challenge was to arrive at which method, fir us, was the most efficient.

Short

78

X 97

546

7020

7566

Long

78

X 97

Grid

= 6790 776 7566

Grammar and English

In English this week we have been looking at a piece of text from the book Daughter of the Sea and have been ask the question why is this is an effective piece of writing?

We needed to look and see from the 2 paragraphs what the author was trying to show us through her writing. We discovered that there was: awe & wonder; celebration; together at last and connection between Gioga and the seals.  This plan will give us lots to write about when we answer the original question.

In Grammar we have been looking at the 3 types of Action Verbs

  1. Intransitive Complete – subject performs the action / no receiver of the action
  2. Transitive Active – subject performs the action / direct object receives the action
  3. Transitive Passive – subject receives the action

Science

We did a Respiratory Rate for Different Activities test which meant that we had to count our breaths of resting, Jumping Jacks, walking and running.  These

We plotted on a chart. This showed us how the lungs activate for different activities.

Spellings

Soft ‘c’ when followed by e, i, y it sounds “s”; and soft ‘g’ when followed by e, I, y it sounds like “j” words e.g.: medicine, gentle, bouncy and celebrate

History and Geography

We have been drawing scenes from WWI inspired by Remembrance Day, so our chalk and charcoal picture (which are just black and white) will have a tiny spot of red to stand for a poppy.

We also looked at what happened at the end of the war.  Everybody celebrated. Some ex-soldiers in hospital were left feeling guilty because they couldn’t help finish the war.  The people at home celebrated very differently by cheering and having big celebration parities.

Cyber-bullying videos.

We have now finished all our filming. These have been downloaded on the school computers and we are going to edit them next week.

Year 5 exercise books

We are going to be bringing home some of the old books we used last year. They don’t need to come back to school again – they are ours forever!
