The week began by us receiving a letter from the DFE to congratulate us for our 100% pass rate in the phonics test that children take in year 1. It was fantastic to be recognised for our hard work in Phonics and our excellent results. Phonics is the vital component to establishing a solid foundation in reading. Therefore, we ensure that children have daily phonics lessons until they are confident in all the phases of phonics that we expect them to be secure in. From this, we are then able to develop them into ‘lifelong’ readers, who read for information and pleasure.
We work daily to embed a curriculum that stimulates your children, that makes them question the world around them and develops them into confident and independent ‘life-long’ learners. We talk about ‘life-long’ learners, because primary school truly places the stepping stones for the rest of their futures. It is during these early stages of their education that they are developing their preferences and creating their first memories of learning new topics. If we don’t offer children a rich, diverse and exciting curriculum each day they enter our school doors, then we are not fulfilling our roles. It is our duty to inspire a love of learning.
As part of this, we challenge our children to always push themselves and to always ‘be the best’ they can be in everything that they set out to do. You may hear your children talk about being ‘purple learners’ or pushing themselves to be in the ‘challenge zone.’ If not, ask them about this and see what they say. If your child is in EYFS or KS1 ask them about what it means to be a ‘purple learner.’ If they are in KS2 ask them about either purple learning or about the challenge zone. Get them to explain this to you. You may have heard your children talk about a ‘fixed’ or ‘growth mindset.’ At Crowmarsh, it is this way of approaching our work and about the ‘growth mindset’ that we bring with to our learning that ensures our success.
