This week in Class Three we have continued to focus on our letter writing skills. The class have been mastering the key features of a letter. We also discovered that just because a letter has all of the key features (address/date/introduction etc.) doesn’t mean it is a good letter. We looked at an example written by Om and gave her some Next Steps to improve her writing. As with all of our writing, we looked at the word choices Om had made and the sentences she had used. We replaced some of the ‘tired’ words (words that are overused) with more exciting vocabulary. By the end of the week all children had also planned and written a letter of their own pretending to be Om describing a hunt. The whole class produced writing to be proud of. In Maths this week we have concentrated on time telling skills. This is an abstract concept and a lot of children find this tricky. Please support children in perfecting this skill by referring to time at home as often as you can. You could tell them dinner is ready in 20 minutes and ask them to work out what time that would be.
Alongside our learning we learnt about a story called ‘Austin’s butterfly.’ The whole focus is on Austin not giving up and making his drawing better and better each time. The children loved the story so much that we decided to draw some butterflies of our own. They had to carefully look at the shape of the wings to get an accurate outline. The children encouraged each other by giving helpful next steps on how to make their partner’s butterfly more like the original photograph.
