This week we have become immersed in division. We have looked at short and long division initially with the latter being the one that traditionally causes the most problems. Over the next week we will look at different forms of long division involving factors but for the time being we are just trying to secure this element. To that end, I will often supply the answer with the calculation to ensure that the focus is always on the process.
Meanwhile we are looking at some mental strategies for adding and subtracting by rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and then adjusting the answer accordingly. Ask your child to show you what I mean.

As a class we are becoming more confident with planning but it will still take a lot of work over the coming months to make sure that it is embedded as a natural part of the process. Meanwhile, we are really starting to appreciate the need for different voices in writing and are developing the use of more formal sentence stems to depersonalise writing. For example, ‘I have noticed’ quickly becomes ‘It can be seen’ while ‘I think that’ becomes’ It could be argued’.
In grammar we are ready to move on from adverbs which we have studied and applied in quite some depth. Next week the joys of prepositions will take centre stage.
