English: This week we have…
Continued looking at performance poetry. We did a performance in front of a few other groups. We also went back to the poem ‘The Sound Collector’ and talked about what The Sound Collector might look like. As a class we decided he wasn’t a very nice character so to help us describe him we looked at some evil characters from films and books. This inspired us to write a story about The Sound Collector who came and stole all of the sounds in the world. We spent some time redrafting our stories and writing them up in neat. We are really pleased with the final results and can’t wait for you to come and read them next Wednesday!
Maths: This week we have been …
Learning about fractions and helpful methods for tricky subtraction sums.
We have found out how to find a fraction of number. E.g. ¼ of 16. To work out the answer we had to use our times table facts. How many 4s go into 20? 4,8,12,16,20. There are five lots of 4 that fit into 16. So ¼ of 16 = 5. Once we knew what ¼ of 20 was we could work out 2/4 and ¾.
We also used a method called counting on (or the frog method as we like to call it).
Instead of doing 195 – 174
We start with 174 and count up in jumps to 195 giving us the difference.
(+6) (+10) (+5)
174 180 190 195
10 + 6 + 5 = 21
(to make it easier when adding we always start with the biggest number)
We then know the difference between the two numbers is 21 so 195 – 174 = 21
