In our topic sessions this week we have been learning about the workhouses where poor people or families went to live if they could not support themselves. We discovered that workhouses were very harsh places: people had to work very hard, in poor conditions, all day long and were given very little food to eat. After looking at pictures of workhouses, we brainstormed good adjectives to help us describe them. We wrote setting descriptions, using prepositions (e.g. in, on, under) to start our sentences in different ways, and conjunctions (and, but, so, because) to link ideas.
In maths we have been learning about shape. We have learned the names of and discussed the difference between 2D and 3D shapes When describing 2D shapes, we used vocabulary such as ‘straight’ or ‘curved’ to describe the sides and found out that the corners are called ‘vertices’. We also learned that a shape with 4 straight sides and 4 vertices is called a quadrilateral. Later in the week, we looked for lines of symmetry in shapes.
During our gymnastics sessions we have been creating different balances by placing different points of our bodies on the floor.
In science we have been finding out whether seeds can grow in different conditions – e.g. in the dark, with or without water and so on.
