This week we enjoyed a wet, busy and active visit to Harcourt Arboretum. On arrival we split into two groups, one group used their foraging skills on a treasure hunt to find a range of natural materials to make an evergreen winter wreath. The other group had the benefit of an excellent arboretum expert to guide us around an interesting and informative nature walk, looking and learning all the way. After an hour the two groups changed over. We then met up for a much needed lunch in the barn to recharge the batteries.
On our visit we saw the tallest tree in the arboretum, tiny insects ( springtails ) having a party in a pinecone and learnt the difference between evergreen and deciduous trees. We learnt all of this and so much more. Ask your child to tell you the difference between a male and female holly tree.
Hopefully we will be able to visit again in the spring so we can observe the changes in the seasons and explore nature first hand.
