This week we started to learn about a small Indian village called Chembakoll which is in the Nilgiri hills near Bangalore. So far we have looked at lots of pictures of the village and discussed the similarities we can see between Chembakolli and Crowmarsh. We also learned that the Adivasi people, who live in Chembakolli and other nearby villages, have been working on the land and living in the area for many years.
In our English lessons we listened to a traditional Indian tale, ‘The Tiger Child’, and discussed the features of this type of story which is told and handed down from generation to generation. Ask us what we found out. We practised telling the story to each other, using adjectives to add description and a range of time phrases or conjunctions to sequence our story. Later in the week, we planned and started writing our own version of the story.
Maths lessons this week have been focused on length. We know that length can be measured in centimetres or metres and found objects in the classroom that were longer or shorter than given lengths. We also discussed which everyday objects we would measure in metres and which we would measure in centimetres, and why. One of the things we had to work hard at this week was using a ruler accurately to measure objects or lines.
We are still learning about plants in science and this week we found out about the different ways that seeds can be dispersed, including by wind, water and on animals. Ask us what we discovered.
