Dear Parents/Carers,
This week we continued our theme of ‘Animals’. We started the week by sharing the story of ‘SOLO’ a story of a baby penguin who face challenges as he grows and tries and tries to overcome them. The children were able to say that SOLO was being a purple learner and not giving up. The children have been talking about polar lands and learning about what a setting is, describing the setting in small groups.
In Maths the children have been learning about capacity. We talked about capacity being how much a container will hold. The children used language such as full, empty, half full, ‘bigger capacity than’, ‘smaller capacity than’ to explore different sized containers. The children made predictions about the capacity and then tested their ideas. We talked about the bath being a good place to explore this further, gather containers, jugs, pots and pans and use them at bath time.
Using games, songs and activities the children have been introduced to the vowel digraphs ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, or, ar and ow. Please continue to practise the graphemes at home so that your child is familiar with them all. The next graphemes to learn are in your child’s book bag this week.
With all the cold weather we have had this week the children have spent a lot of time this week exploring the ice. They have talked about the texture and have been breaking it up in various ways such as throwing it on the floor and using tools including spades and rakes to break it apart. As a class the children did an experiment to see how objects changed when put into a cold place (the freezer). The children felt and described the objects before they went into the freezer and then discussed how they had changed after being in the freezer.
