Week 3 (19/01/2015)

What a busy week this week has been. Year Three have continued our topic of Art in the style of … This week we have looked at Eric Carle (Author and Illustrator of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’). He has a very unique style when creating his characters by completely covering a piece of paper in tissue paper or paint. Carle then cuts the individual shapes out of the paper to build the characters.   Apologies for the lack of photographs from last week. Slight technical error but here are some photographs attached of this week’s art.  Next week the children will be cutting out the shapes needed for the head, arms, legs etc. of their characters and sticking it all together to create their artwork. I will include photographs next week of the final pieces.

Class 3.1 Class 3.2

In English we are continuing our topic of Myths and Legends. This week each child has written an ending to the Kuang-Li myth. We have spent a lot of time this week peer assessing with two stars and a wish. This means children are reading each other’s work and sharing two things they really enjoyed and providing one wish ( something they can improve on) to make their writing even better. The focus has been on description so Class 3 have been looking at the following to make their writing more exciting:

– alliteration
– similes
– using the five senses to add more detail
– include extra information about the characters and setting

The children are then allowed to use the special polishing pens to edit their work and add suggested improvements before it is marked in detail by myself.

In Maths this week we have revisited fractions. The class seem to really be getting the hang of this. We have been using the following language to explain it:  The bottom number of the fraction is always how many pieces in total there are. The top number is how many out of that total that you have… eaten/shaded etc.  Please encourage your child to demonstrate their knowledge at home. Perhaps you could discuss how many slices of pizza/cake/segments of orange etc. they are going to eat out of the total.

Don’t forget swimming lessons are on a Friday. Please remind your child to bring their swimming kit to school on a Friday and then take it home again to be washed before the next session.
