Thank you so much to those of you who were able to find time to come along to the family consultations last week. I hope you found it both interesting and useful to hear how well your child is doing and how you can help at home. Just to recap, my main message was in the questioning you can use when your child is assaulting the homework tasks. At any point during the process, asking the key question, ‘How are you going to make this piece of work significantly different to the last piece?’ will really help to focus the efforts not on completion, but on progress. This reflects exactly the same message that underpins the philosophy in our classroom where the emphasis is always on your child understanding how they can make improvements for themselves.
Homework
May I just take a moment to remind you of the class books and their use. With, ‘life being what happens when we are busy making plans’, there will often be times when the homework just can’t be completed. At other times the work may become too challenging to address independently and away from the security of the classroom environment, or you may have noticed something they need some help with. In any of the above cases please take a moment to make a quick note in their class books. Without such a message from home (or a separate note if for some reason the class book has gone missing) the consequences for not completing homework are unsettling to say the least.
This is an important term for Year 6 and is actually one of my favourites. All of the settling in has been completed so we can spend every moment experimenting and implementing different ways to improve work. The quality of work will really progress while their mental maths skills will sharpen up even further.
