Week 3 (16/01/17)

Maths

We have been doing equivalent fractions and other sorts of fractions e.g. top heavy fractions (a top heavy fraction is when the numerator is bigger than the denominator which means it is greater than a whole one.)

With the fractions we have been adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing them. Some of us are even tracking our English targets in maths! In mastery we are making our point, explaining it and evidencing by highlighting our reasoning.

English

We have been writing in a different from our usual and using the style and copying Cornelia Funke. We are writing as if we were a guard (1st person) or if we were narrating the action as a bystander (3rd person) of the first impression of the fairy in the story Reckless. We have been thinking about our own targets such as rhythm of three, structure and output. When writing it is really important to follow a good plan. The plans we have done are effective in the planning template. Also we need to think about our stories having balance and purpose (action), (speech) and (development).

Grammar

We have been looking at more complex sentences and diagraming them using all the skills we have been learning so far in year 6.  After we have diagrammed it, we then have to do a key to reason each part of the sentence and explain what each job of the sentence is.

Science

What would you say to someone who said that the sun moves across the sky?

Mr.S gave us this question and we had to talk about it and then write about it. It was really tricky because we want to say it but we are not allowed to use pronouns too often.

We had a Question and Answer session with Mr S. and tested his knowledge by asking him tricky things.

The Planets – there are 8 planets in our Solar System. Any planet with evidence of water would indicate that it could support life.

We are going to learn more about earthquakes and volcanoes in the next few weeks. What are ‘plates’ when we talk about the Earth’s crust?

ICT

Year 6 have been using the ipads J.  We are making children’s story books using a popplet app.

Year 5 exercise books PLEASE PLEASE TAKE US HOME…..

We are going to be bringing home some of the old books we used last year. They don’t need to come back to school again – they are ours forever!
