Dear Parents/ Carers,
Last week class R started the term by talking about what they had been doing during their holidays. They talked about places they had been and who they had spent the special time with. The children asked questions about the experiences each of them had and related it back to experiences of their own.
In Maths, the children started to learn about the language related to money. We named the different valued coins and began to gain a better understanding between the quantity and value of coins. You could practise this at home. Count how many coins you have on the table/in the money box and then count the value of the coins. What do you notice?
After a discussion last week it was decided that class R will learn more about birds this term extending our Land, Sea, Sky theme in a different direction. This week we watched clips from the BBC ‘The life of Birds’ and discussed statements such as ‘all birds can fly’ giving our opinions and our reasoning behind our thinking. We have made bird food to encourage garden birds to visit our garden and talked about the different birds we have seen in our gardens at home. During Independent Learning Time the children have been role-playing in our bird sanctuary. Caring for the birds, inviting the public into see the birds and celebrating eggs hatching!
In Maths we are learning about subtraction (taking away), we have been singing songs including 10 fat sausages and 5 little monkeys to the children understand that when we subtract a given number the quantity left will less than the given number they started with. The children have been introduced to the phoneme/grapheme correspondence of ‘ar’, ‘or’, ‘ur’ as well as the keywords ‘you’ and ‘my’. They will now have the next set of flashcards to learn in the book bags. Please be using these daily as vowel digraphs are trickier for the children to learn.
