In Maths this week Class 3 revised our expanded column addition (a new method introduced last week) and learnt a new method to aid in tricky multiplication questions. The numbers are partitioned and put into a grid to simplify the sum. Here is an example.
5 x 36
Partition 36 into tens and units (30 and 6)
Then work out each step at a time.
5 x 30 = 150 (use knowledge of 5×3 = 15)
5 x 6 = 30
| x | 30 | 6 |
| 5 | 150 | 30 |
Finally put the two answers back together. 150 + 30 = 180
Much easier than trying to work out 5 x 36! This method is known as the grid method.
In ICT this term we have started exploring coding through a program called ‘Scratch’. This in a new requirement on the national curriculum this year so has been brand new to staff and children alike. Class 3 have enjoyed exploring the possibilities of building a virtual world. Scratch is available online as well although the website looks slightly different to the software we use in school. If you are feeling creative or want to learn some new skills ask your child to show you how to manipulate the sprites (characters) on screen.
