Welcome back to a new term. We hope you had a lovely and restful Christmas and New Year. Thank you so much for the kind and thoughtful Christmas gifts.
This week we have started our topic on Victorians. We started off by thinking about anything we already knew about the Victorian Era. We then talked about what a monarch does and what the British Empire was. We then found the countries that were part of the British Empire on a map. Later in the week we found out about the life of Queen Victoria. We are really looking forward to our trip to Reading Museum’s Victorian schoolroom on the 22nd January.
In maths we have started to learn about division. When we are dividing we know we need to do ‘fair sharing’ to make sure we have equal groups. Using resources and drawings, we solved division problems. We also used bar models to represent division problems and to write the related multiplication facts. Later in the week we used number lines to illustrate how division is repeated subtraction. Because we know that division is the inverse of multiplication, we have used the multiplication facts we know to help us solve division problems.
If I know 12 ÷ 4 = 3, then I also know that 12 ÷ 3 = 4, 3 x 4 = 12 and 4 x 3 = 12.
In Science we have started to find out about humans and other animals. This week we looked at lots of different animal babies. We had to try and think of what the baby animals were called and what they would become once they were fully grown, e.g. a tadpole becoming a frog, toad, salamander or newt. We then had a go at matching pictures of baby animals to their parents.
