This term we have started off with the word, ‘Focus’.
In collective worship we have discussed the importance of concentration in ensuring success. James demonstrated for us, that it is very difficult to ‘focus’ on two tasks at once, and almost impossible to have a conversation while trying to do those two tasks at the same time!
Our theme this term is ‘Being Champions of our Learning’. Every week the children will be delivered a special purple envelope with a new learning word. This will tie into our themes each week for collective worship. In class, staff will discuss the word with the children and throughout their learning they will refer to that word and think about how they can apply it both in and out of the classroom.
Already the children have been talking about how they can keep ‘focus’ on their learning at hand and what they need to do to eliminate all distractions around them to ensure they always achieve their very best.
As a school, we tried to remember five words – Tree, Mirror, Saturn, Motorway, Tricycle.
We then had to try to work out some other questions which were – What is 12X9, On your left hand use your thumb to count 1,2,3,4,5 and then back again, 6,7,8,9,10. Now, in your head, recite the last five letters of the alphabet backwards.
I then asked the children to try and remember the five words I had given them. Some could remember, but most of the school could not remember the five words, highlighting how difficult it is to try and do more than one task well.
So, ask your children what they need to do to remain focused on their learning? How do they deal with distractions? What do they need to change in order to improve their concentration?
