In our topic work this week we have been using non-fiction texts to find out about the Titanic and to sequence the events of the fateful night that it sank. We have also continued our work on descriptive language by using our best ‘wow’ words to describe stormy weather at sea.
Mr and Mrs Pollard (Ben’s parents) came in on Monday afternoon to tell us all about diving under the sea. They told us about all their equipment, let us try some of it out, and showed us lots of photos. We enjoyed asking them questions about their experiences and the wildlife they had seen under the sea.
Grace F also brought in a fascinating ‘Show and Tell’ –a swordfish nose! We were amazed at how long it was and at how sharp its spikes were.
In Maths we have continued our work on ordering numbers to 20, and beyond. We have also been matching written numbers to the corresponding numeral (e.g. nine – 9). Using lots of small objects, we have practised estimating, then counting into groups of 10 or 5 to check how close our estimates were.
This year we will be doing four ‘Nature Detectives’ weeks over the course of the year (where we’ll be looking at plants, wildlife and seasonal change). The first of these will be the last week of this half term – the week beginning the 20th October. During this week the children will be doing a lot of outdoor learning so please make sure they have waterproofs and wellies in school all week.
Task: As preparation for our Autumn Nature Detective week, who can collect a range of different seeds? You can present them in any way you like, but please make sure you bring them in by Friday 17th October.
