This week we learnt about how The Great Plague spread through London in 1665. Thinking like historians, we considered how terrifying it must have been for Londoners knowing that they could catch this awful disease at any moment and that there was no cure. As part of our journey back in time we passed around handkerchiefs soaked in vinegar and posies of flowers because that is what Londoners did in order to ward off the bad air which they thought caused the plague. We also sang Ring a Ring o’ Roses and dressed Mrs Beckett up as a plague doctor! Ask us what we asked her. Later in the week we started to learn about the Great Fire of London of 1666, using different texts to discover information and then sequencing the main events in chronological order.
In maths we have been concentrating on addition, using concrete apparatus to represent calculations before moving on to representing them using pictorial methods. We have also continued to practise our number bonds because it is so important that we learn those by heart.
The art work that we have started this week is linked to our Fire of London topic – we have created fiery backgrounds so that we can add city silhouettes to them next week.
