Week 1 (07/01/19)

Maths

Arithmetic – this week we have focused on finding fractions of amounts using two main techniques: dividing by the denominator then multiplying by the numerator; multiplying only the denominator then diving by the denominator. We have also been refining the use of equivalent fractions to make calculations more accessible. For example, finding 4/16 of 440 is easier using equivalent fractions. 4/16 = ¼ making this calculation much more accessible

In the main concept work we have been looking at decimal and fraction equivalents. This has gone very well so next week we will move on to percentages which can get quite meaty.

English

Reading  – we are continuing to develop the accuracy of answers by deepening the understanding and application of inference skills. This is leading nicely into the composition work in which…

Compositions

…we are analysing the class text to establish how speech, action and development (of characters, plot and atmosphere) is balanced and what impact the author’s choices have. This will help the class make better decisions as to what they will write, by considering more carefully the relationship between the author and the reader.

Science

Lovely topic this term – Earth and Space. Bit of a pet subject for me so hoping to get all fired up over this one. The main focus for the first couple of weeks is the solar system before moving out and looking at some deep space objects.

New Feature

There is a new feature for this term that is still highly experimental which has been given the enviably catchy title – Cultural Reference Point Friday.

Each week will feature a different decade. We will look at the music that was popular at the time, technology of the moment, transport and major events. We are hoping to build (in a very light hearted way) a better understanding of where their most everyday environment has come from. Can’t wait to show them the first TV’s,  telephones still fixed to the wall, power-cuts in the 70‘s, Moon landings, Binatone Games machines (Any of you had one of those?), Ernie the Fastest Milkman in the West by Benny Hill,  Chopper bicycles, Action Men.

Should be good.
