Maths
We have covered a lot of fraction work over the last couple of weeks and so now have entered a period of consolidation. We will be spending a little while now circling fractions, identifying gaps and pushing forward into problem solving rather than learning lots of new routines.
The skills work meanwhile has gone up a notch. This week in particular we have been looking at division, revising the techniques already covered earlier in the year while starting to apply them to more detailed situations and at increasing speed. This work has called heavily on many skills: times tables, addition and estimation through doubling skills, finding the difference, decimals, dealing with remainders – all in the name of division.
English
This week has all been about skills. We are building towards our next piece of composition which will be a persuasive text, so we have been establishing and rehearsing new skills, including the use of emotive language (the kitten!) and counter arguments. This has led to an adaptation of the fishbone plan to enable negative pints to become the foundation of positive points.
Meanwhile, we have really picked up the reading skills, looking at familiar terms, such as inference and opinion, and breaking them open to reveal the actual skills being used e.g. skimming, synonyms, evidence etc.
