Maths
Fractions have been going very well this week. We have learnt how to multiply fractions by whole numbers and by other fractions allowing us to start tackling some pretty tough calculations and problems. The trick to learning fractions is to make sure that all the skills are being rehearsed simultaneously, to which end we have been using simplifying, comparing against a half and a whole, equivalence multiplying and addition, all in the same problem.

The most recent composition is drawing to a close now meaning that we will spend a little time debriefing and analysing the learning that has taken place. And what a lot that is. So many of the class have taken some tremendous steps forwards. Most notable improvements can be seen in their ability to plan effectively, their understanding of structuring an introduction that links into a flowing main body text, and their use of statistics and research to strengthen an argument. Along the way, they have learnt how to create a more technical voice by using much more sophisticated language and sentence structures, which link and flow together in a much more organised and impactful way.
History
Next week we are going to take a much closer look at local fallen heroes, culminating in a trip to Hill End where some real trenches have been built to commemorate the 100th year since the end of WWI. It should be a really good opportunity to put the recent learning about the need for and construction of trenches into a more realistic context.
