We have had an excellent week with our English work. The earlier part of Year 6 was predominantly taken up with learning how to expand ideas. This term we have started looking at writing for an argument creating both balanced and persuasive texts. This is an excellent opportunity to learn and refine planning skills using the ‘Fish Bone’ plan because this style of writing is so structural. An effective text needs to develop a point in detail so it is an excellent way to rehearse the skills frm last term.
Spellings this week have been focused on whether or not to double the ‘r’ in words ending in –fer when adding a suffix such as –ing or –ence
Science has really developed well. Our studies have focused on ‘Thinking Like a Scientist’ , learning how to raise questions, test them and interpret the results in a meaningful way. I am really pleased to hear the class using much more concise language in their explanations while presentation skills, especially table and graph construction is far better now.
Maths has taken us into the world of fractions. This week has been spent developing techniques for achieving a common denominator using factors and multiples to order factions and compare them. Next week we will add and subtract them before multiplying and dividing them.
In maths skills, a lot of work is going into basic arithmetic skills with most of us rehearsing darts! In class, children are adding single, double, and treble values then subtracting them from 301 with the emphasis being on a what technique to use rather than only seeking the answer.
I’m very pleased to see that as a class, the quality off the homework seems to be improving. More children are coming and asking for help during the week which shows a growing independence. Thanks to everyone for their help at home. I will begin to send home some English work as well over the next week, so keep a look out for that.
