Welcome back! We hope you’ve had a lovely half term.
Firstly, we would like to apologise for the fact that our last blog did not get posted before half term as was intended (due to an admin oversight). The children have now all been given a ‘takeaway homework menu’ which gives ideas for topic-based homework if they would like to do some; however, this was intended for half term and is optional, not required. We will start to send home spelling and maths-based homework soon which should be prioritised over topic homework.
This week we have started to learn about the Great Fire of London. We found out that the fire started in a bakery in Pudding Lane but that there were several reasons why the fire spread so fast and became such a huge disaster. Ask us what caused the fire to be so severe. We re-enacted fire on the playground, with some of us pretending to be buildings, some of us being fire wardens and some of us being the wind! Back in the classroom we looked at some extracts from Samuel Pepys’ diary and discussed why they are so important in telling us what it was really like during the Fire of London. We brainstormed all the different things people might have seen, heard, smelt and felt if they were there at the time.
In maths this week we have been learning about related number facts; for example, if I know that 4 + 3 = 7 then I know that 40 + 30 = 70. We have also been working out our number bonds to 100, firstly using just multiples of ten (e.g. 20 +80 = 100, 40 +60 =100), then using tens and ones (e.g. 45+55= 100, 32 + 68 = 100). We practised adding the ones first to make a ten then adding the other tens.
