Now that we have a better handle on our times tables we have begun to move off into the order of operations following BIDMAS to establish the order in which mixed operation calculations should be solved.
Brackets
Indices (e.g. 33 = 9)
Division and Multiplication – solved in the order they are found
Addition and Subtraction – also solved in the order they are found
In class we will take this into some deeper problem solving where possible before heading off into division next week.
English
Composition is still focussing on the depth of planning and the use of Point, Evidence, Explain to expand ideas. In class we are beginning to look at more sophisticated sentence stems which will help to bring flow to writing by providing more options while improving their access to more formal phrases. We will continue to use Daughter of the Sea as our source material as we continue to explore what makes an author’s style.
In grammar we are learning how to apply adjectival and adverbial questions to identify the different elements of a sentence. The questions are as follows:
Adjectives answer these questions about nouns and pronouns:
- Which one?
- What kind?
- How many?
- Whose?
Adverbs answer these questions about verbs, adjectives and other adverbs:
- How?
- When?
- Where?
- To what extent?
- Why?
Science
We have been learning about the circulatory system, especially the structure of the heart and how it pumps the blood through different blood vessels. The challenge has been to try to explain this process independently. We will soon move on to look at the structure of the lungs and how the alveoli work.
