This week we have continued finding out about the events of The Great Fire of London. We thought about what we might have seen and heard at the time, and thought about how we might have felt. We planned and then wrote a diary as though we were in London, in September 1666. We had to remember to use ‘first person’ and to write in the past tense.
In maths we have been looking at the fact that addition is the inverse of subtraction. We have started to learn how we can use subtraction to check our answers to addition calculations, and vice versa. We also looked at ten frames with different coloured counters on and thought about the different addition and subtraction calculations that it represented.
Can you give us some missing number problems based on these?
E.g. _ + 9 = 18
18 – _ = 9.
In science we set light to 6 different materials to see which ones burned easily and which ones didn’t. We made some really sensible predictions. We found out that cotton wool burned the easiest and concrete, brick and metal didn’t burn at all. We related this to The Great Fire of London and realised that the fire would not have spread so easily if the houses had been made of brick. We also put some leaves into the fire pit and watched how quickly they burned. Then we wet the leaves and put them in the fire pit. This time the leaves wouldn’t burn. We therefore realised that if the weather hadn’t been so hot, and the wood so dry, the fire would not have spread as far as it did.
In P.E we have worked really hard to travel in imaginative ways. We can include balances, turns and jumps in our gymnastic sequences and can create lots of different body shapes.
