Week 4 (23/11/2015)

This week the children have been putting 100% effort into practising for their ‘Nativity’. Their Nativity is based on nursery rhymes and they are becoming familiar with the different words to otherwise familiar tunes. The children are very excited about performing and keep asking “Are we doing it today?” The children had a note in their book bag this week to inform you of the character they are playing and the costume they will need to bring in, by the 4th of December please.

In Literacy, we created a thought shower about character and started to share words and phrases to describe characters in the nativity story. We have collected ideas on our ‘ideas wall’ so  we can learn about character descriptions and write a class character description next week using the ideas we have gathered.

Over the last two weeks the children have been learning about 3D shape. The children have found 3D shapes in the environment including spheres, cuboids, cubes, triangular prisms, cylinders and we have talked about how we know it is a given shape using mathematical language such as face, flat, curved, edge, circular, square, rectangular, equal and opposite. You could try this at home by asking your child if they can find any of a given shape and asking them how they know it is that shape, try and encouraged them to use mathematical language.

In phonics, we have been practising the phonemes/graphemes that we have learnt so far and have been using them in words to practise blending and segmenting. Last week the graphemes j, w, x, y, z as well as to, no, go, I and ‘the’ went home. You can cut these into flashcards and play games as with the other flashcards that you have been given previously. You can practise blending at home using this game http://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/PictureMatch.html.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Miss Zimmerman, Mrs Conway and Mrs Bowden
