WELCOME TO CLASS THREE
I hope everybody had a fantastic summer… it seems so long ago already. Thank you to the parents who came to the curriculum talk; it was lovely to see so many faces and meet you properly.
This has been our first full week back at school and we have covered so much already. The children were introduced to their topic this week ‘The Stone Age to the Iron Age.’ We realised very quickly that Stone Age people did not talk in the same way as we do today. Instead they used grunts, actions and drawings. The class split into groups and had a go at communicating important information to each other in the Stone Age way. Here were some of the messages they had to get across to each other without talking.
‘Beware of the predator in the woods!’
‘We are going fishing tomorrow on the other side of the hill.’
‘Fire!’
In maths this week we have been covering core skills such as number bonds and how we can use these number facts to work out trickier sums. E.g. If you know 7+ 3 = 10 you also know 17 + 3 = 20 and 70 + 30 = 100. We even had some children work out that 1070 + 30 = 1100.
English this week has also been ensuring children have the fundamental skills of building sentences. We looked at what types of words appear in a sentence (verbs, subjects, nouns, adjectives etc.) and their role in the sentence. We also looked at the importance of full stops and capital letters. Children should know this from key stage one but it is always surprising how many forget to put them in.
This week was also the children’s first time using the brand new laptops. We started by exploring word and children in pairs made a title page for the ‘Stone Age to the Iron Age’ topic books. Microsoft word was a new programme for the majority of the children so we went through lots of the basics including words size, font, colour and how to move the mouse around the page.
Homework – There is no homework this week, however children will be set homework on Monday 14th September due in for Friday 18th September.
