The difference between Batman and Superman……

This week I asked the children a question.  What is the difference between Batman and Superman?  Can you answer this?

Do you know?

Think about it in relation to ‘growth mindset.’

Have it yet?

Well, I asked the children during collective worship and Charles  gave me the answer I was looking for. He explained that Superman was ‘given’ his super powers and Batman has to work hard to be who he is.  An excellent answer and just what I wanted.  Yes, Batman has to put in the effort and the practice to hone his skills.  This is what we are establishing with the children – if they continue to be determined, resilient and steadfast, they too will perfect their skills.

Then I asked the children how many hours of practice, Malcolm Gladwell asserts, are needed before you become a ‘master.’  Neo’s hand shot up and he too gave me the answer I was looking for – 10,000.

We have some very ‘switched on’ kids here!

This is the ‘theme’ in school at the moment.  Teaching the children that effort and patience do eventually pay off.  That failure is the greatest part of learning because it is through our mistakes that we often learn our greatest lessons.

It is a difficult lesson to teach children….they always want to get things right.

At home, talk to your children about times you have failed and what you learnt.

Mistakes are a necessary part of learning…..
