Last week Class R continued to learn about autumn by starting the week with an autumn walk around school. They found different coloured leaves, and used their senses to explore; they heard the “howling wind” and “crunched” the leaves. We learnt about poetry and used our autumn experience to write our own poem “Autumn Walk”.
In Maths the children have started to learn about repeating pattern. They started by continuing a repeating pattern and developed their thoughts by creating their own patterns and answering questions about what would come next, where the pattern starts/ ends and how many times it repeats. You can practise creating patterns at home with the children, make your own and ask them to tell you what the pattern is. Can they make a repeating pattern and answer questions about their pattern? This week the children have been learning about alliteration. We read the story ‘Animalia’ which is an ABC of alliterative animal phases. We talked about the sounds we could hear at the beginning of the words and then created our own alliterative phrases. The children modelled the letters in their names using salt dough while thinking about words that start with the same sound.
In phonics the children have been learning the sounds m, d, g, o, c, k and ck. As a class the children have learnt how to blend words to read and segment words to write. Parents have inquired about children using the ipad for learning at home the ‘twinkl phonics Suite Light Edition’ is a really good, free app, which would support your child at home with their letters and sounds. Next term our theme is ‘Nursery Rhymes’ after discussions with the children it seems they would like to learn more about space so we will focus on firework night using the rhyme below, we will then learn about space with nursery rhymes such as ‘Twinkle Twinkle’ and ‘Hey Diddle Diddle’ you might like to visit this website http://www.esa.int/esaKIDSen/OurUniverse.html with your child during half term.
You will find a piece of plain A3 paper in your child’s book bag. Please use it to show us what they have been learning during their holiday. It might be information they have found out about space, visits they have been on or a skill that they have learnt or practiced.
