In English this week we have been writing our own diary entries as the girl in the story. We thought carefully about what to include and we made sure that we followed the features of diary entries. We all had feedback on our work and from that we worked on editing and improving our writing. In reading, we worked in our groups to develop our fluency when reading aloud and we have continued to think about how the girl and the city are changing.
In maths we have been exploring 10, 100 and 1000 more and less from any 3 or 4 digit number. At the end of the week we started to learn about rounding and we will be continuing with this next week. In our fluency sessions, we have focused on doubling and halving.
On Wednesday, Class 4 visited Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford to learn more about the Maya. We started off by looking at an object which we decided was a basket and we found out that the Maya would have carried the basket with the strap across their forehead. We then got to look at 8 different objects from the Maya civilisation and we had to guess from a 3 options what the artefact was. The items included a jade earring, cacao beans and a whisk for making hot chocolate frothy, a calendar and a stone for grinding maize. After that we went on a quick tour of Pitt Rivers to look at a few specific Mayan items. We ended the session by starting to design a Mayan headdress. We will be completing these designs next week. We all really enjoyed the workshop and it helped us to understand what Mayan life was like.
