This week we have looked at the poem ‘The chimney boy’s story’ by Wes Magee. We looked at the vocabulary choices that the poet had made and at the number of ‘beats’ in a line. We thought about what it might have been like to work in a coal mine or a factory in the Victorian times and brainstormed what we might have been able to see, smell, hear and touch as well as how we might have felt. We then used our brain storming ideas to create our own poems.
In maths we have continued to find out about fractions of shapes and amounts. We had to work out how to divide different quadrilaterals into quarters. In another investigation we were given 4cm by 4cm square (drawn on squared paper) and we had to find out how many different ways we could cut the square in half. We were surprised to see that the 2 halves didn’t even have to look the same; they just had to have the same number of squares in each half. Later in the week we tried the investigation again with a 6cm by 6cm square. At home can you use some different amounts of objects and see if you can halve or quarter them?
On Tuesday we had a ‘Rock Steady’ workshop, we found out all about different instruments including the drums, the guitar, the keyboard and our voices. Some of us were lucky enough to be chosen as band members. The audience were also allowed to participate by clapping along to the music.
In science we looked at plants, bulbs and seeds. We observed what they look like now and thought about what they might look like after they have been put in a fridge, a dark cupboard and in a sunny place. Ask us to tell you about what we hypothesised; there were lots of different ideas!
