We have been using skills check for our calculations. This has meant that we are using lots of different strategies to work out our number sentences. We have also been comparing various strategies such as short division and long division to find the answers; to find out which is the most efficient and effective. We can have the answers to the problems. This is when we use our strategies to calculate how the answer was reached.
When we see the = sign, we say to ourselves ‘is the same as’.
Mr S. asked us the question: Is the bar- model a useful problem solving method?

120 ÷ 3 = ?
120 ÷ 3 = 40
Therefore each space in the bar-model has a value of 40

Our challenge is to write a persuasive letter, being balanced but with an element of bias. We are looking at the question of whether Jannet should have removed Gioga from her home and placed her with some family. The use of a well detailed and constructed plan showing the pros & cons for each point will make writing our letters so much stronger because we will have counterbalanced each argument in favour of our bias which will mean that the reader will be convinced of our opinion. Sue Palmer who wrote May’s Moon came in to talk to us about her book – it was inspiring.
Nativity Play with Year R
We have had a few rehearsals with year R and it is starting to go together well. The lights are sorted out as is the music. We have been getting used to how loud to say our lines and when to say them.
History and Geography
Using all the skills we have gained in literacy, we can now put together a report and evaluation on our WWI history topic. We are focusing on modal language, output and the question ‘So what?’ which means that we expand our answers.
Year 5 exercise books
We are going to be bringing home some of the old books we used last year. They don’t need to come back to school again – they are ours forever!
