On Wednesday, Class 4 visited The Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock.
When we were there we completed lots of different activities learning more about the Romans.
First of all, we learnt about what the Romans would have worn and we were all given a tunic to wear. Some of us got to dress up even more while we looked at the different types of clothing.
Then we rotated around –
Looking around the Roman Gallery
Here we had to find the answers to questions within the gallery. We learnt that when Romans died they often had their head cut off and then their head was placed next to their feet with 7 coins in the mouth. This was to pay the ferryman and help their soul pass to the next life. We also looked at a large pot and why the markings on it were important. We talked about how all of the artefacts had been found in Oxfordshire.
Dressing up in Roman clothes
We all had the chance to dress up in the clothes that we had looked at during the first part of the workshop.
Hunting for artefacts
Here we imagined that we were archaeologists, we used brushes to look for items buried in sand. We then had to identify which artefacts were Roman and which weren’t.
Handling objects
We also had the opportunity to look closely at and handle a variety of Roman artefacts.
Then later, we learnt all about a Roman soldier. We looked carefully at what a soldier would have worn and how this would have helped him in battle. Finally, we imagined we were all soldiers and we took part in a Roman drill. We learnt the Latin commands that we used and we found out about how discipline was maintained through the use of decimation.
