Dear Parents/ Carers,
‘Commotion in the Ocean’ by Giles Andreae started our week. We read the story and then talked about the different creatures that can be found under the sea and if they were mammals, birds or fish. The children shared their own experiences of seeing ocean wildlife in the wild and in aquariums. We watched a clip of the undersea world on the Interactive Whiteboard and talked about the similarities and differences between the three different sharks we saw; a sand tiger shark, silvertip shark and great white.
In Maths the children have been learning about length. They used language such as longer than, shorter than, shortest and longest to compare the lengths of different objects. The children then used multilink to measure how long different objects were, being careful to make sure they measured the objects by lining up the end of the measuring stick to the end of the object. We also explored the length of different sharks using a metre ruler to see if they would fit in our classroom. We discovered a whale shark can grow to double the length of our classroom!
Mrs Wortley has been teaching us this week about Mothering Sunday and why it is special. While she has been in school we have made a special surprise for our Mummy or a lady in our lives that is special to us.
In phonics we have been playing a game on the netbooks to help us put words in order to make a sentence that makes sense. The children have had to use the keypad on the notebooks and click and drag the words. The children have also been recapping all the sounds they have learnt. You can help at home by continuing to use the flashcards and create words with the flashcards especially the digraphs (two letters that make one sound) so that the children can practise recognising the digraphs and trigraphs in word so they can read the word.
Next week we will be learning about animals that you may see on safari in Tanzania, wildlife such as zebra, giraffe, elephants, antelope and lions. We will write poems based on these animals. In Maths next week the children will be learning about subtracting (taking away).
