In English this week we have been reading ‘The Wolves in the Walls’ up to when the wolves really did come out of the walls. We have looked at the language choices that the author has made in order to engage the reader and make us want to read on. We have been busy writing our own stories which continue from this point of the wolves coming out of the walls. We had to consider how we would link the beginning of the book to our own work and ensure that we kept our own writing in the correct style. Throughout our stories we have had a go at using prepositional phrases and we have been using description for impact.
In maths we have been continuing with our fractions work and we have been learning about fractions that equal one whole e.g. 5/8 + 3/8 = 1. Then we moved on to learning about fractions that are greater than 1 e.g. if I have 5 quarters, 4 of these go together to make 1 whole and then 1 quarter is left. This then lead us into learning about mixed numbers.
On Monday, we continued with our new history topic and we learnt about disease and medicine in the Middle Ages. We found out that not very much changed in terms of medical knowledge during this time as it was only monks who were interested in learning and much of the ancient medical knowledge had been lost. Most people at this time were very religious so therefore understanding of disease had mostly gone back to the belief that illness had been sent by God and therefore could only be cured by God. We looked at a picture of a medieval hospital and thought about what this evidence told us. The evidence concluded that people had no idea about how infection spread and that most hospitals were built like churches.
