Week 2 (12/01/2015)

Dear Parents/ Carers,

This week the children listened to the story ‘Snow Bear’.  The story is about a polar bear who went into the world to explore for the first time, he played with a seal in the icy water but then found himself lost.  The children retold the story using pictures and props and answered questions about the story including ‘How did the Snow bear get home?”. We then engaged in ‘hot seating’, the children took it in turns to take on a role from the story ‘Snow Bear’; the little girl, snow bear, husky dog or seal. The children asked the children questions to find out more about the character and the story.

In Maths the children used their knowledge of number and addition and accepted a challenge to find how many different ways they could make ten. They used various different resources in the classroom to support them with their calculations including lolly sticks, Lego and number lines.

Through games and activities in phonics this week the children have learnt the sounds j,v,w,x,y,z,zz,and qu. This week these sounds will come home as flashcards please start using them at home to play games and build words.

This week we started out Land, Sea and Sky theme. The children have been learning about the Arctic and Antarctic. We watched ‘Frozen Planet’ comparing the environment with ours. We noticed that they live in wooden houses similar to us, we could see lots of ice and the wildlife is very different to ours. We talked about the question ‘Can anything be frozen? We learnt that ice is frozen water and then we placed different materials and liquids into the freezer to find out if other materials change in the same way as ice. You could explore this at home by describing objects and then placing them in your freezer and talking about how they change, remember to ask your child how it has /has not changed.
