Dear Parents/ Carers,
Happy New Year! We hope you all had a relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable Christmas. The children are all very refreshed and it is good to see them back. Get well soon to those children who are not feeling well, we hope to see you soon.
This week Class R shared their holiday news, the children talked about what they did on their holiday, the places they had visited, family they had seen and told us all about the fantastic gifts that friends, family and Father Christmas had given them. The children talked about how different families celebrate in different ways and listened to each other, recognising when their peers had celebrated in a similar way to them. One child had spent Christmas in a hot country and had been swimming on Christmas Day in an outdoor pool! The children used their knowledge of letters and sounds to write about the gifts they received.
In Maths the children have been learning to estimate, using what they know to make a good guess. They have been looking at a group of objects, estimating the number and then checking by counting them. They have tried to look carefully at the size of the pile so they can estimate if there would be more or less than the previous count. With Mr shorter this term the children will be learning gymnastics. On Wednesday they “did the same as each other”, “We crossed the mats, and we did forward rolls”.
The children have now got more independent access to creative ‘bits and bobs’ including, googly eyes, feathers, cotton wool, lolly sticks and wool. They have been talking about the texture of the different materials and learning about how they can use them in different ways. They have all made a collage of their face using the materials and are learning to sort them back to where they belong. If you have any objects that you no longer need that we could add to our ‘bits and bobs’ draws then please bring them into school in a bag. This could include bottle tops, corks, straws, buttons, beads, old wool and shiny paper. (When bringing objects please remember we are a nut free school) Thank you.
Next week we are beginning our theme ‘Land, Sea, Sky’. In Literacy we will share the story ‘Snow Bear’ written by Piers Harper. We will talk about the story and then hot seat characters. The children will learn to ask questions in response to the story. In Maths the children will continue to learn about addition, beginning to solve problems using their knowledge of number.
