Dear Parents/Carers,
It was Bonfire Night on Thursday! All week the children have been learning about why bonfire night is celebrated. We shared the story of Guy Fawkes and how he committed treason. The children learnt that Guy Fawkes tried to place gunpowder under the kings chair, in the cellar of the Houses of Parliament. The children learnt that Guy Fawkes was arrested and taken to the Tower of London. The children were shown pictures of the Tower of London and the Houses of Parliament.
In phonics this week the children have been learning ‘b’, ‘h’, ‘f/ff’, ‘l/ll’ as well as ‘ss’. The children have been playing splat the tricky/High frequency words. Your child has an A3 piece of paper in their book bag with the high frequency/ tricky words on. You could challenge them to splat a word. When you say the word they splat their hand on it. You could challenge them how many words can they recognise in one minute! Please continue to support your child to learn their letter/sound correspondence by using the flashcards in your child’s book bag.
In Maths, the children have been learning about shape. They went on a shape hunt, finding circles, squares, rectangles, pentagons and triangles. We also talked about hexagons and octagons. The children were then encouraged to describe the shapes using language such as sides, corners, opposite sides are equal (the same) , all sides are equal (the same) length.
The children have been learning about labelling this week. They have all created a piece of firework art using a salad spinner. They watched a firework display on the ‘Prowise’ board and Miss Zimmerman scribed labels to described the sound of the fireworks. The children then all had a go at sounding out their own word to describe a fireworks. We had some fantastic ideas, as you can see below! You could encourage them to use their knowledge of letters and sounds for a writing purpose at home by encouraging them to write labels for pictures/models they make. We talk about labels tell the reader more information about their model/picture without having them to ask questions.

These moments will be printed and added to your child’s learning journey. Your child’s ‘Learning Journey’ has been sent home today (Friday 6th November). Please share your child’s Learning Journey with them and return it to school on Monday (9th November) so it can be quarantined for 72 hours. We would really appreciate it if you could fill out the A4 piece of paper in your child’s learning journey while you share it with them, then stick it on the next clear page. The A4 page is also available to print on the website under class R page.
Mrs Wilkin will be joining class R on a Wednesday afternoon to support Mrs Bowden and Mrs Mathews while Miss Zimmerman has her PPA time. If you see a new face at the end of the school day please feel free to introduce yourself.
