This week, we have continued to read our abridged version of The Secret Garden. Again, we started the week by exploring the new vocabulary that we would be reading. We have also been thinking about how Mary’s character is changing and what is happening inside the secret garden. In English we have been exploring how we can re-arrange words within a sentence in order to create more interesting sentence openers. On Friday, we watched the opening of the film version of The Secret Garden and we compared this to the opening of the book. We will be continuing with this comparison next week.
In maths, we have been finding fractions of amounts. We started by using counters to solve problems such as what is 1/6 of 30. We learnt how to arrange the counters into 6 groups (denominator) and then look at 1 of the groups (numerator). Later in the week we moved onto drawing the calculation as a bar model and calculating fractions of amounts when the numerator is greater than 1.
Everyone should have received login details for Times Table Rock Stars, the children are very excited about this program and should be encouraged to use it at home for regular short sessions. Please let me know if you have any problems with this.
