Today Class 4 visited the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford to learn more about Ancient Egypt.
We started off with a chance to look around the Ashmolean museum. We looked for Ancient Egyptian items in other galleries and we found a wide range of other interesting artefacts.
In the afternoon we had our main session about Ancient Egypt. Firstly, we looked at a map of Egypt and thought about why people chose to settle near the River Nile. Then we had to search for items in the gallery such as toys & games and pots. We used picture clues to help us locate the items.
We then moved to the next gallery and had a close look at Taharqa’s shrine which part of a temple built around BC 680. We learnt that the shrine was dedicated to the sun god Amun-Re. In this gallery, we also had a go at being Egyptian detectives. We worked in groups with an object from Ancient Egypt, we firstly held and smelt the item and then we worked together to try and decide what the item might have been. One item was a mirror and another was the base from a small statue of a ram.
In the last gallery we had a good look at the mummies that they have at the museum. We thought about who might have been mummified using evidence from their coffin. The mummies were a priest and a woman who enjoyed singing & dancing in order to worship Amum-Re. Finally, we were given a box of artefacts belonging to one of the people that we had learnt about and we used the clues to solve the puzzle!
