In English this week, we have been looking at extracts from Samuel Pepys diary to see what he wrote about the Great Fire of London. In the extracts we learned that Pepys saw some people staying in their houses until the last minute before grabbing belongs and running to the river. He also saw pigeons with their wings on fire!
We discussed the main features of diary writing – they are written in chronological order, in the past tense and in the first person (I, me, my) – then we brainstormed all the things people might have seen, heard, smelled, tasted or touched during the Fire of London. Using all these ideas and the things we’d learned from Pepys’ diary, we imagined we were in London during the fire. We planned, then wrote diary entries, trying to use time conjunctions to link our ideas (e.g. next, after that, later that day, that evening, soon).
In maths, we have continued to practise strategies for addition and subtraction and have been using diennes (tens and ones) or number lines to help us add or subtract two numbers. Can you give us some to practise at home? (Two 2-digit numbers or one 2 digit and one 1 digit number.)
In ICT, we created London soundtracks in groups using different instruments, then recorded them using the ipad.
We have continued to investigate materials in our science lessons. This week we continued to test our bridges to see which ones had the strongest structure.
