So after a week or so in Year 6 we have already covered a lot of ground. We have been focussing on lots of basic skills to make sure that there is a good grounding to move forward.
Tables have of course featured very strongly in maths. Here, the emphasis has been on trying to hit them from as many different directions as possible while pushing the confidence to use them in much harder sums. Try asking them to calculate numbers up to 19 x over the next couple of weeks to see if you start noticing an improvement.
We have really started to get to grips with descriptive work and there is a nice buzz from many who are really keen to show what they have already achieved. It’s amazing how you can start with the simplest sentence but by asking the right questions find ways to expand it into a paragraph.

This is a really valuable source for making history relevant to children and an excellent source for those looking to add spice to their repertoire of anecdotes for filling awkward silences…
In the meantime, keep a look out over the next week for the ‘Classroom Planners’, a journal for the children to keep a log of homework and a useful classroom aid.
