Class Three have had an interesting week in English, learning more about the Viking characters in ‘How to Train your Dragon.’ We have watched clips from the film to help inspire us in our learning. They started by looking carefully at the characters Hiccup and Stoick the Vast. Using only the first two minutes of the film, we looked for clues to what the characters may be like. The children decided Hiccup sounded like quite a weak Viking, and Stoick the Vast was very important and more like the typical Viking we imagine. They also invented their own Viking island after looking at maps and information from both the book and the film. Class Three quickly realised they had to use words with horrible connotations to make their islands sound like places people wouldn’t want to visit or invade. A few of the Viking place names included ‘Rotten Isles, Skull Island and Dagger Bay.’ Class Three designed and made their own maps. They then wrote a descriptive passage explaining where their Viking islands were in relation to other locations.
In maths this week we have be revising column addition and practising expanded column subtraction.

We have been using lots of practical resources to help children subtract.
We are continuing to learn about out topic ‘Where in the world’ but the focus has now shifted to natural landmarks, in particular volcanoes. This also has links with our new science topic ‘rocks.’ In ICT we are starting to learn about coding. We will be using scratch in school to develop our coding skills but I have included the link to a great website that helps teach elements of coding.
You can also access scratch online for free, but be warned, the website is slightly different to the version we have in school.
