In Maths this week we have been…
Using a cross between partitioning and column addition to help us add 2 and 3 digit numbers. Mr Cosford has taught us how to partition numbers to break them up making it clear what each digit represents when we use the column addition method. Once we have mastered this we will be using the compact method of column addition. We also learnt about ‘multiples.’ A multiple of 3 is any number in the 3 times table (or bigger if you times another number by 3 the multiple is the answer).
4 x 3 = 12 so 12 is a multiple of 3
You can also check if a number is a multiple of 3 by seeing if 3 divides equally into it.
21 divided by 3 = 7
21 can be divided equally by 3 into 7 groups so 21 must also be a multiple of 3.
We also wanted to tell you about our times table test we do each week. Every time we beat our best score or get full marks we get a house point. We are finding this a fun way to learn our times tables as we are motivated to go home and practice.
In English this week we have been…
We have been writing a recount from one of the goat’s points of view in the Three Billy Goats Gruff. We had to pretend to be one of the goats and retell what it was like to cross the bridge and meet the troll. We spent a while planning our recount paragraph by paragraph thinking about the sounds/sights/smells we would have experienced along the way. We also talked a lot about emotions of watching our little/big brother cross the bridge. To help us write well we magpied words and sentence starters to make our own and put on our plan. This was to remind us to use them when we wrote our recount.
We knew a recount was a retelling and spotted that both words started with re. This made us look at other words that started with the prefix of ‘re.’ We worked out that ‘re’ meant to do something again and investigated other words that also used the prefix re.
In Science this week we have been…
Learning about forces and magnets. We did an experiment seeing which ramp a car would roll furthest on. There were 4 ramps. They were made of wood, carpet, sandpaper and foam. We predicted which ramp we thought would allow the car to roll best. Before completing the experiment we spent time discussing things that Miss Hustwayte had done in her experiment that were unfair. One of the examples was that she pushed a car down one ramp but let it slowly roll down another. There was another one where a car rolled into Enya’s foot. Miss Hustwayte said it was fair and the car wouldn’t have rolled any further so that ramp couldn’t of been very good. We had to explain to Miss Hustwayte why it was unfair. We were all pleased our prediction was correct and (most) cars rolled furthest on the wooden ramp.
Row prizes
Each week in class three we do a row prize on the carpet. We sit in four rows and compete to get points for being the best row. Each week the row with the most points wins a row prize. We haven’t figured out as a class yet what we would like our row prize to be.
