Dear Parents/Carers,
We started the week reading the story ‘The Grufflo’s child’ and talked about the setting, we looked at describing the time of day and the place the characters were, including the forest and the cave. Later in the week we listened to setting descriptions and drew our own setting picture based on the description. The children have used the ideas in their pictures to create a cold weather scene around the role-play igloo.
In Maths the children have been learning about capacity. They used rice, lentils, water and multilink to learn what capacity is by investigating the capacity of different containers. The children found out some interesting facts “These two hold the same amount; I thought that one would hold more because it is taller”. You could investigate this at home with dry ingredients such as rice, beans, lentils, sand or with water. Encourage your child to think about which has the larger/smaller capacity. How do they know? Predict, how many of one containers contents would fit in another container? If the children have three container and 5 of the smaller fit in the larger, will more of the second largest container fit in the largest container or less? Try it, see what you discover.
In phonics we have learnt the sounds sh, ch, th and ng. We have also learnt the tricky words me, be and we. The children have been continuing to play games and engage in activities to practice segmenting words for writing and blending for reading. As your child become more interested in writing encourage them by writing list, letters, cards and labelling pictures. The children have all been really interested in making books this week, drawing the pictures and then telling/writing the story. If they create any books during the weekend please encourage them to bring them in to share with the class.
Next week we will be reading ‘One Snowy Night’ by Nick Butterworth and will be creating our own story endings then using our knowledge of letters and sounds to write our ideas down. In Numeracy we are learning to compare lengths.
